Cracked copies don't stay working

VocalRig authorises against our licence server and revalidates on a schedule. That check is not a one-time gate at install — it keeps running for as long as you use the plugin.

When a serial turns up in a public dump, on a keygen, or shared between people who didn't buy it, we set it to blocked. Blocked serials fail authorisation permanently. In practice that means the plugin stops working in the middle of a session — on a project you were halfway through, with no warning and nothing to roll back to.

Every patched build we've seen breaks on the next release anyway. VocalRig ships updates regularly, and each one invalidates whatever was patched around the previous version.

The bigger risk isn't us

Cracked audio plugins are one of the best-documented malware delivery routes there is, and the reason is structural: a keygen or patched installer asks you to turn off your antivirus and grant administrator rights — the exact two things malware needs and can't normally get. You are told the warning is a false positive. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it isn't, and you can't tell which from the download page.

Producers are a specifically targeted group for this, because the machine running a cracked plugin is usually the same machine holding unreleased sessions, client work, sample libraries, saved logins and a payment method. A €39 plugin is a poor trade against any of that.

What we actually do

• We file takedowns. VocalRig uploads get reported to the host, the index and the file locker behind them. Mirrors get reported as they appear.
• We block leaked serials permanently. A blocked serial cannot be re-activated, on any machine, ever.
• Leaked serials are traceable. Every serial is bound to the purchase it was issued for. If a serial ends up in public, we know which licence it came from — and that licence is the one that gets blocked.
• Your licence ends. Sharing a serial, redistributing the plugin, or circumventing activation terminates your licence under the EULA, with no refund.

If your own serial ended up somewhere public — a screenshot, a shared machine, a forum post — tell us before someone else does. We'll block the old one and issue you a replacement. Owning up costs you nothing; letting it circulate costs you the licence.
